"We are going to be the premier facility on the Great Lakes," says Toledo Beach Marina operating manager Tim Tadson. The marina, which was purchased out of foreclosure in April of last year by the Sterling Group is, in the middle of a massive renovation project designed to reinvigorate the 50 year old club. The effort is being overseen by Semo Post and Pam Poirier, who also manage the Jefferson Beach Marina located on Lake St. Clair.

The redesign goes far deeper than just a few gallons of fresh paint. Among other improvements, the Toledo Beach Marina, has, in the span of a year: added new signs; new, high-speed fuel dispensers; rebuilt seawalls; constructed a brand new pavilion; repaired and upgraded hoists; completely renovated large and small bathhouses and erected a kayak and dingy launch facility that includes a wetlands observation deck. "We have a three to five year plan to upgrade the entire facility. We're really focusing on improving the aesthetics and making the changes necessary to improve customer satisfaction."

Additional upgrades and improvements are on the horizon. A 30 by 30 foot play area for children will be installed in this May. The marina owns 208 acres of land and is planning on building a nature trail around an eagle's nest, that resides on the premices. The marina is also invested in reclaiming it's beach. "Years ago we had a very nice beach. Over the years much of it was lost to the changing water depths. It still needs some work, but we have the opportunity to put a really nice, long beach in here," said Tadson.

Toledo Beach Marina's future plans also include a complete renovation of the front office's, customer lobby, a fitness center and adding a full five-star restaurant.

The new pavilion on the water front has an old time feel of the yester-years, bringing back the excitement the Old Toledo Beach once had. “We’ve ordered all new furniture and plan on running specials this summer.” Said Tadson.

Currently, the Sand Bar Grille restaurant is overseen by Chef Paul Grosz, who also operates a top rated Detroit restaurant, The Cuisine, which was the 2002 Free Press Restaurant of the Year.

The Sterling Group, who owns both Toledo Beach Marina and Jefferson Beach Marina, was founded by Gary Torgow and is primarily a real estate investment company which has recently begun to diversify. As Tadson explains, "the Sterling Group is a wonderful company, they're out of Detroit and are committed to South Eastern Michigan and Monroe County. They see the marina as a good future investment and they're right. Toledo Beach Marina is one of the few deep water marina's on Lake Erie. We're centrally located, close to Toledo, Detroit and Put-In Bay. We can handle boats of any size, from a 14 foot in our Rack and Launch or a boat that needs 120 foot well or an 80 ton yacht. And we're going to offer all the amenities a boater could want."

“We're a family resort," said Tadson, "we want to have something for everyone."
